A woman involved in a “sickening attack” on a young mother in front of her children has escaped jail.

Amy Boyle, 19, of Wynford Avenue, Islington, was given a three months suspended jail term and ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid community work at Hendon Magistrates Court on Wednesday (May 17) after she pleaded guilty to common assault against Leila de Aguiar.

Ms de Aguiar, 23, was travelling on a packed bus in Hendon in January with her daughters - aged seven months and three - when she became involved in an argument with Boyle and her boyfriend Nathaniel Pope over buggy space.

CCTV images showed Boyle, who had her child in a pram, launch a foul-mouthed tirade and spit at the victim, before Pope savagely attacked her.

He smashed her head against a metal pole three times before dragging her off the vehicle and kicking her repeatedly in front of shocked passengers.

Ms de Aguiar suffered a bloodshot eye, bleeding from her ear, bruising, nausea and disturbed vision.

Detective Sergeant Brad Crossley said: “I think this sentence is well merited as it was a sickening attack on a lone woman with children.

“Neither of the convicted showed any remorse for their actions either in interview or in court.

“The CCTV on the bus provided compelling evidence of the despicable nature of this attack.

“This sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable.”

Pope, 21, of Derwent Rise, Hendon, was jailed for four months after he also pleaded guilty to common assault.
