Thirteen per cent of secondary school pupils in Islington say they know someone who carries a weapon.

That’s according to Public Health, which commissioned a questionnaire of 3,300 primary and secondary school students for a survey about young people’s lifestyles in the borough.

The biannual survey, which was carried out last summer, said 18pc of Year 10 pupils said they had been attacked – or someone had tried to attack them. The figure was 11pc for Year 8.

The report, which was set to be heard at a town hall meeting of Islington Council’s health and wellbeing board on Wednesday, also shed light on mental health: 28pc of primary and 20pc of secondary students were worried about a family member’s mental health. Twenty pc of secondary pupils were worried about their own mental health.

It also found that 23pc of reception and 37pc of Year 6 children are overweight or obese. And it said 15pc of primary and secondary boys drink sugar-filled energy drinks every or most days.
