The long-running dispute between the senior coroner for inner north London, Mary Hassell and the area’s Jewish and Muslim communities might be coming to an end, as the decision will be given tomorrow on her refusal to prioritise burials.
Lord Justice Singh and Mrs Justice Whipple will give their judgement on the case tomorrow morning at the Royal Courts of Justice.
This follows a two-day review last month.
The Adath Yisroel Burial Society, who have brought the action, have complained that she has shown a disregard for the need of Jewish and Muslim people to be buried as quickly as possible, for religious reasons.
She currently operates a ‘cab-rank’ system where she deals with deaths on a first-come-first-served basis.
This has sometimes resulted in a delay in bodies being released for burial.
The Jewish and Muslim faiths attach special importance to the length of time between death and burial and representatives say Ms Hassell’s decision has left families unable to properly grieve.
Her remit covers deaths in Camden, Islington, Hackney, and Tower Hamlets.
