An armed police unit on a manhunt in Newington Green is believed to have been called out in connection with a domestic affair.

It is understood police responded to calls suggesting a man might attempt to enter a house with “bad intentions”.

Dozens of officers armed with guns have been hunting for a man since about midday - closing off Pyrland Road and Ferntower Road and searching residents’ homes and gardens - and are still at the scene.

Some residents have been kept locked in or out of their homes all afternoon.

It is not known if the man has a gun but a police spokesman said armed officers are only there as a precaution.
