Police still looking for man after armed operation in Newington Green

Police are still seeking a man who was at the centre of a manhunt carried out by armed officers in Newington Green yesterday.

Officers are hunting a 19-year-old who was believed to be carrying a blade or knife and was seen in the area.

Residents feared a gunman was on the loose but police have confirmed the suspect did not have a firearm.

Many were locked in or out of their homes for several hours as armed officers scoured the area, closing off streets including Newington Green Road, Ferntower Road and Pyrland Road, after they were alerted at about midday. It is understood they were called in connection with a domestic incident.

All streets were reopened at about 8pm. No arrests have been made.
