Problem boozers face struggle to get drunk in Islington after third bid to curb their antics

Pubs and bars around Islington High Street, Upper Street and Essex Road will now enforce a “banned from one, banned from all” plan to keep drunks from the area.

Inebriated punters can be banned instantly via a new crime-fighting website – Angel Fighting Crime Partnership – which allows all pubs, cafes, bars and shops to instantly post and share pictures of drunks, suspected phone and bag thieves, and anyone behaving anti-socially.

It’s the third new policy introduced to stop booze-hounds slaking their thirst in the area; the late night levy, a tax on all premises opening after midnight to be introduced in the autumn, means that many pubs in the area will shut earlier.

Meanwhile shopkeepers this month launched a clampdown on street drinkers in the borough by refusing to sell cheap super-strength alcohol.

Christine Lovett, director of Angel AIM who set up the new website, said: “We have invested in an online tool that enables bar and door security staff to communicate immediately with other licensed premises – a photo of someone banned from a pub for drunkenness could be seen by the bar down the road before they even get there.”

Patrick Donnelly, who owns Slim Jim’s in Upper Street and chairs the local pubwatch group, said: “All our members were unanimous in their enthusiasm to adopt this scheme. Its another tool in our armoury to keep Angel a safe place to go out.”

Sgt Chris Walsh, from the local police team, said the scheme would help make the area the “safest town centre in the country by instantly showing drunks that their behaviour will not be tolerated anywhere here”.
