Officers and paramedics were called to Islington’s main shopping street at 6.30pm. The man – who has been named as 30-year-old Marcel Campbell from Tottenham – was attacked outside the Udderlicious ice cream shop, near the junction with Tyndale Lane.

But he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Murder cops are investigating. They are trying to trace at least two young males thought to have been involved in the killing, with one image emerging last night of a male running from the scene – though it’s not known if he’s connected to the incident.

A police helicopter was heard circling the borough last night. No arrests have been made.

Business owner Gregory Barry saw the incident unfold over his CCTV. “There were two blokes in a van,” he said, “it pulled up on the street. It looked like there was an altercation and the fight carried on outside the van.”

William Potter, who lives near the scene, told the Gazette: “I was in my flat and heard a lot of commotion, police shouting at the public.

“They already had the space cordoned off when I looked out of the window. There was a big group of people at the end and a lot of people around what turned out to be the victim, performing CPR.

“That was going on for a while, 10 to 15 minutes, and then I saw them put a blanket over this guy. It was a young black male. They then put him in a tent to preserve his dignity.”

Last night’s incident was the third knife killing in Islington this year, after Steve Frank Narvaez-Jara, 20, died in Bartholomew Court, Old Street, on New Year’s Day and Kwasi Anim-Boadu, 20, was killed in Finsbury Park’s Andover Estate on April 21.

William continued: “It’s not shocking in the sense that there’s a lot of knife crime in London. But it’s mad it would happen at 6.30pm on a busy street like Upper Street.

“There must have been a lot of witnesses - shops closing, rush hour traffic, people coming home from work - so for someone to do that in broad daylight is quite unusual.

“It’s senseless.”

Typically, the tragedy brought out the best of Islington. Rev Simon Harvey opened the doors of nearby St Mary’s Church and offered shelter to people who couldn’t get home because of the police cordon.

Rev Harvey said last night: “As it gets quiet, our thoughts return to the reason that there’s police tape across our parish. Another grieving family. Lord have mercy.”

Islington South and Finsbury MP Emily Thornberry told the Gazette this morning: “I would urge people, if they saw anything at all, to come forward.

“I don’t know where this guy came from, but wherever it was, he had family, and friends. I am thinking about them this morning.”

It happened yards from where Jonathon “JJ” McPhillips was stabbed to death outside Islington Town Hall in February last year.

His mum, Michelle, told the Gazette this morning: “It’s absolutely devastating to know that once again, someone has been murdered in Upper Street. I’m thinking of his mum this morning. It’s flooring.

“Islington needs to wake up. If we don’t start taking these monsters off the streets, this will continue happening. The police need the community to help. There would have been lots of witnesses last night – they have to come forward.”
