A woman and her eight-month-old baby are in a serious condition in hospital after a car mounted the pavement and hit them in Green Lanes on Friday, before the driver fled the scene.

Five men have been arrested after the blue Vauxhall Corsa hit the woman and girl, who was in a pram at the time, at the junction of Green Lanes and Hermitage Road.

The Corsa had mounted the pavement after hitting a yellow Seat Ibiza, which left the scene after the crash. Police later tracked it down in Andre Street, Hackney, and arrested the driver, who received medical attention for shock, and two passengers.

The driver of the Corsa fled the scene but was stopped by members of the public nearby, and arrested by police. A male passenger in the car was also arrested.

The mother and baby were taken to an east London hospital where they remain with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating.
