Cycle stands in Finsbury Park have been removed after they were installed in “the wrong place”.

The stands by a Blackstock Road bus stop were criticised by the Hackney Cycling Campaign for their positioning, and the council admitted it had installed them in the wrong place and removed them on Friday.

Jono Kenyon, coordinator of the Hackney Cycling Campaign, said he supports increased cycle parking provision but the new parking installed was “taking away space at a busy bus stop.”

“Islington and Hackney councils both have transport policies which prioritise pedestrians above car users. So it is odd,” he said.

Offering an alternative view on Twitter, TheGunnersPub highlighted how it was “disgraceful” that the cycle parking had replaced bins at the bus stop, saying pavements would be covered in “discarded food”.

However one cyclist who had been using the stands said that the location – opposite Sainsbury’s -– was convenient. “People complain about stupid stuff sometimes”, she said.

Islington transport chief Cllr Claudia Webbe said before the removal: “These cycle stands are clearly in the wrong place, and an obstacle for pedestrians.

“We’ve asked our contractors to remove them, and will find a better location nearby to meet the high demand for local cycle parking in Finsbury Park.”
