A derelict former hostel off City Road could be brought back into use as offices.

Talal Developments has submitted plans to convert Judd House in Mora Street into commercial space.

The building, not far from the Old Street roundabout, was last used by Paddington Churches Housing Association and the Housing Corporations, who moved out in about 2004.

Before that it was used as an asylum seekers hostel.

As the development includes no housing, Talal would pay £277,600 towards off-site affordable housing, while also making a contribution for affordable workspace elsewhere, as the office won’t provide any.

No objections have been received from neighbours and the plans are recommended for approval at a town hall planning meeting on Monday.

Officers said in a report ahead of the meeting: “The active use of the building would positively contribute towards the strengthening of the City Road Basin as an office location, and would be a sustainable and well-designed development.”
