Eight charities fear for their futures after being evicted from their low-rent premises.

Some fear they will fold after being served notice by landlords Ethical Property.

The charities, based in Archway Resource Centre, in Waterlow Road, will be kicked out between February and May.

Ethical Property today said it had “no choice” but to sell the building due to its poor condition.

Subject to planning permission, a developer will convert it into two houses.

Shaughan Dolan, from the Conscience Campaign, which has been in the building for 10 years, said: “Everybody is outraged. It’s just in time for Christmas as well.

“It leaves us with three options. We can find somewhere similar at similar rent, which would likely mean moving out of London and harming our service users.

“Second, we can pay higher rent elsewhere in London, but cut back on services we provide.

“The third is to fold. All the charities are in different positions at the moment.”

Other organisations currently in the premises include Small Steps, the Association of Visitors to Immigration Detainees, Peace Brigade International, the Everyman Project, Suitcase Media, and Lively Minds and the Community Network, which share an office.

Mr Dolan, who will appeal for the help of Islington Council at a town hall meeting tonight (Thurs), added: “It’s important to remember that many charities have been here a long time. We have been here 10 years, and the Peace Brigade 18 years.

“We have formed a community in our own building. We help each other out. It’s an irreplaceable setting.

“Having that taken away is devastating.”

A spokesman for Ethical Property said previous repairs carried out on the building could not address “serious issues” of dampness and poor ventilation, while further work would be too costly and disruptive.

He added: “This was not a decision that we have taken lightly.

“We will provide support to tenants to take up alternative accommodation.

“While we do understand the tenants’ concerns, given the state of the property we have no choice but to dispose of the building.”
