1980s pop star helps Finsbury pupils hit the right note with ukulele band

A 1980s songstress has helped to launch a new Ukelele Orchestra at a Finsbury school.

Singer Sam Brown, who wrote and sang the 1989 chart hit, Stop!, held a workshop and masterclass at Hugh Myddelton School, in St John Street, on September 26.

The stringed instrument, originally from Hawaii, has had a resurgence in popularity and the school has decided to establish a regular after-school club for pupils interested in forming a Ukelele orchestra.

Sam said: “It’s a small instrument, easy to learn and anyone can play it, so it is the perfect first instrument. If you want to play it seriously, they come in different sizes too.” Sam runs several music groups in London, including The North London Ukelele Collective.
