Boxing lessons have proved to be so successful at an all-girls secondary school that a new club has been set up there.

Pupils at Mount Carmel Catholic College, in Holland Walk, Archway, have been learning the basics of the sport from Islington Boxing Club’s coach Anthony Wright.

The workshops have proved so popular that the school has established a new satellite club called KS4 Girls’ Boxing which runs after lessons every Wednesday. The students are also encouraged to join Islington Boxing Club in nearby Hazellville Road to further develop their talents.

The sessions were introduced to the girls by head of PE, Tracy Quirke, to inspire students to take part in a wider range of physical activity as part of an active, healthy lifestyle.

She said: “As Nicola Adams was the first female gold medal winner for boxing, I thought it would be the perfect time to introduce the sport to the girls.”
