A call to arms has been issued by a newly-formed campaigning group fighting cuts to schools across Islington.

In response to looming cuts facing the borough’s schools, with £12million set to be cut from Islington’s education budget over the next three years, Fair Funding For All Schools – Islington has been formed by parents and teachers.

The campaigners – who have been spreading awareness about the cuts for the best part of a year – decided to structure its movement with the creation of the Islington branch of the national campaign originally formed in Haringey.

In the coming weeks the group is hoping to speak to shopowners, families and schools about putting up banners and posters referencing the fights against the cuts, while there is also another protest picnic earmarked for Highbury Fields in September.

A spokesman for the group, which is also planning to host monthly public meetings in Islington Town Hall, said: “Following the General Election, it is now clear that the government hasn’t listened to the thousands and thousands of parents, carers, teachers and headteachers across the country when they raised again and again their concerns regarding the proposed cuts to our schools’ budgets.

“This is the reason why we need to push in our campaign to reverse the government education funding proposals

“We have structured the numerous actions that brave and determined parents have been setting up across the borough these last months under one common campaign: Fair Funding For All Schools – Islington.

“Anyone concerned about the future of the education system in this country is welcome to join us.”

There will be a ‘carnival against the cuts’ in Westminster on Sunday, July 16, with families encouraged to assemble at Victoria Embankment at midday before a rally in Parliament Square at 1.30pm.

The group – which has received the backing of both the NUT and UNISON – can be found on Facebook by searching for Fair Funding For All Schools Islington and also on Twitter under the handle @FFFAS_Islington.

Both social media groups will keep members and followers informed of upcoming meetings and events.
