Flag-waving students at Moreland Primary School and Children’s Centre got a royal surprise last week when the Duke of Kent dropped in to officially open their new building.

His Royal Highness unveiled a plaque marking the occasion at an assembly on September 26 at the King Square school – set to cater for 420 students thanks to its £13million transformation.

Moreland now has bigger and brighter classrooms, a large hall and dance studio and an improved games area.

Headteacher Ann Dwulit said: “We invited the Duke of Kent because we have been on a unique journey which warrants royal recognition, and we were very honoured by his presence.

“We are extremely grateful for the faith Islington council officers and councillors showed in the federation governors, the leadership and the staff team, for sharing our vision and delivering a first-class building.”
