Residents living next to a building site are unhappy with the construction work.

One Housing Group is building 164 new homes on the Six Acres Estate in Finsbury Park.

Tenants and leaseholders opposite have raised issues with poorly lit alleyways, potholes and hoardings being too close to their flats.

They have also complained about unbearable noise, including generators being left on overnight and poor cleaning which has reportedly resulted in vermin.

One woman, who has lived on Six Acres since 1965, said: “It feels like we are living in a slum.”

Issues

Islington Council won planning consent for the site in 2008 and sold the land to One Housing Group.

The development, due to finish in January, has 164 units with 65 affordable, 82 private and 17 under shared ownership schemes.

Homes for Islington (HfI), which manages council housing including that on Six Acres, has a responsibility to help its tenants deal with any issues arising from the construction.

Pat Murphy, of Clifton Court, Six Acres Estate, said: “The management of the site has been very poor. We are pretty much told to live with it. A playground was also removed because of the work so children now have nowhere to play.”

Jean Wilcox, 71, said: “It has just been a nightmare with the building work, dirt and noise. Nobody seems to care that people live here.”

A One Housing Group spokeswoman said: “At Six Acres we work in conjunction with our contractors Wates to keep residents informed of site developments with regular meetings. All work is done between 8am to 6pm on weekdays and 8am to 1pm on Saturday.

“Islington Council has found levels of noise are within the standard requirements. Maintaining the cleanliness is extremely important.

A HfI spokeswoman confirmed the hoardings are necessary to protect residents and they have pledged no generators will be left on overnight again.

“HfI will continue to provide a regular forum for residents,” she added.
