Children at a Holloway school donned yellow clothes on Friday to celebrate the launch of their solar panel fundraising scheme.

Robert Blair Primary School, in Brewery Road, has kicked off an ambitious campaign to raise £10,000 for the energy source after winning a place in a national project.

The school is one of only 15 in the country to make it onto the Solar Schools scheme, which provides all the tools needed to crowdfund the cash and get the panels up.

Headteacher Mark Miller said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as one of this year’s Solar Schools.

“Having solar panels will save us at least £1,000 a year which we plan to spend on books, school trips, resources and so on.

“We’re hoping the whole community is going to get behind us, doing our bit to tackle climate change and teaching our pupils about the importance of saving energy.”

During the coming months of fund-raising, the children will learn about renewable energy, climate change and energy efficiency. The school’s campaign is being supported by Islington Council and the Islington Sustainable Energy Partnership. Sponsorship packages are available for local businesses.
