Protesting against education cuts took on a new shape at Yerbury Primary School as parents and children linked arms to form a line across the playground.
The symbolic gesture of protecting the Upper Holloway school in Foxham Road last week was in response to the threat to Islington’s schools over the next five years. The National Union of Teachers is predicting Yerbury will lose £120,000 to its budget by 2020 – the equivalent of two teachers.
A trio of national parent groups came together to organise the “arms around our schools” event – Fair Funding for All Schools, Save Our Schools and Rescue Our Schools, which was co-founded by Yerbury parent Madeleine Holt.
Families are set to part in a National Education Union-organised lobby of MPs in Westminster on October 24 ahead of the November budget.
Yerbury is no stranger to protests, having recorded a “Schools Just Wanna Have Funds” song earlier this year.
