Islington children set to enjoy their own mini-Olympics

Plans for a mini-Olympics for Islington’s youngsters in Highbury Fields are beginning to take shape.
The event, due to take place on July 26, 2012 – the same day as the torch relay – will feature a range of Olympic sports, including football, volleyball and athletics.
Non-Olympic sports, such as netball, will also be held.
The games were made possible after the council won the right to use a £50,000 grant, earmarked for bunting, as they choose.
As well as the games, the money will be used on a series of events designed to create an Olympic legacy for young people.
These include a torch relay in which pupils will run from school to school, community and family sports competitions and dance workshops at Sadler’s Wells’ theatre, in Rosebury Avenue, Islington.
In addition, an Islington Olympic anthem will be performed by schoolchildren to welcome the torch.
Catherine West, leader of Islington Council, said: “I am delighted that our young people will be involved in a mini-olympics.
“We look forward to young people enjoying what the Olympics are really about in terms of participation and fitness.”
The real Olympic torch will be passing through the borough on July 26 – day 69 of its journey through the country from Land’s End.
