Islington NUT is holding a public meeting as part of a campaign to defeat the government’s plans for all schools to become academies by 2022.
The meeting will be held at Highbury Grove School on Tuesday, May 10 from 6pm-8pm.
Academisation would see schools become independent, but state-funded. It would end all involvement with local authorities such as Islington Council. The government has said this system “empowers” teachers.
But Ken Muller, joint secretary of Islington NUT, said: “Most Islington schools are doing very well without becoming academies.
“Why are Nicky Morgan [education secretary] and David Cameron so determined to force schools to become academies against the wishes of their parents, governors, teachers and support staff?
“The government should be dealing with the real issues facing schools today, like under-funding, the growing teacher-shortage, rising class sizes and the mess they have made of the primary curriculum and testing regime.
“The NUT is going to stand up for education and fight the forced academisation of our schools.”
