A derelict school building has been transformed into a creative classroom filled with puppets and large-scale art.

The facility at Thornhill Primary in Barnsbury, named Outer Space by pupils, officially opened with poems, puppetry and animation by the children.

The school in Thornhill Road has links with Islington organisations the Little Angel Puppet Theatre, Cubitt Arts and All Change, which respectively provide the school with a resident puppeteer, visual artist and poet.

The classroom was paid for through fundraising and the school budget.

Headteacher Mark Chappel said: “All our classes have names of the planets, plus asteroids and meteors, so leaving the school to go to ‘Outer Space’ makes sense.”
