It was a lesson in politics for a set of inquisitive youngsters during a visit to the council chamber at Islington Town Hall.

As part of a study into “what makes an effective youth council”, more than 100 children and staff from the seven Islington schools that make up the Maamulaha network came together for a series of lectures.

As well as talks from Cllr Janet Burgess, deputy leader of Islington Council and Christ the King School governor James Potts, there was the chance to hear from former young mayor of Islington Darey Cletus.

After much discussion and sharing of views, the students decided that qualities needed in forming the perfect council included commitment, willingness to work as a team and being a good listener.

Hargrave Park School headteacher Lisa Horton said: “The chamber is steeped in rich history and being there enriched the children’s experience and inspired them in their collaborative thinking – a really productive and memorable event.”
