A new academy is set to open in September after Moreland Primary School agreed to let it share its building for two years.
City of London Primary Academy Islington will temporarily run in a “self-contained” part of the Moreland Street primary school until its permanent site at nearby Golden Lane is completed.
Moreland will shortly be moving into a new building within the school grounds and has said it will “just about” be able to accommodate the academy.
Ann Dwulit, who is executive headteacher at Moreland Primary School, said: “We are pleased to be able to help the academy. I am sure that the children in both schools will thrive.
“The governors and staff of the St Luke’s and Moreland Federation are known for supporting and working with other Islington schools and it will be a pleasure to support the academy for two years.”
In preparation for the school opening, Kim Clapham, who is headteacher of the new academy, will be delivering a series of parent information events during the autumn term.
“We welcome Moreland as our home for the next two years,” she said.
“This site offers our pupils a great learning environment, with the exclusive use of our own zoned area of the building, complete with sky garden, outdoor terraces, dedicated classrooms and offices while our own state-of-the-art school is built.”
Cllr Joe Caluori, responsible for children and young people at Islington Council, heaped praise on Moreland for allowing the academy to set up home with them despite “many months of disruption” with regard to its new building.
He said: “Allowing the City of London’s new primary school to set up home with them, to accept pupils from next September, is an extremely generous and welcoming gesture.
“I am sure the two schools will work closely together to ensure this goes as smoothly as possible, with eyes firmly fixed on a bright and successful future for both schools.”
City of London Academy also runs a secondary school in Prebend Street, Islington.
