Elderly man hit by sportscar in ‘serious collision’ near Islington Green

An elderly man was hit by a Mercedes Convertible on Essex Road near St Peter’s Street just before 12.21pm this afternoon.

A police spokesperson said that the victim is believed to be in his eighties.

Witnesses described seeing a sports car with damage to the windscreen.

Passers-by went to help the victim, who has been taken to hospital with serious injuries to his leg and his chest.

London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance service attended the incident.

Police say to expect ‘significant’ traffic delays, as the A104 Essex Road is closed in both drections from the junction with Upper Street near Islington Green to Cross Street,

Bus routes 56, 38, 73, 341 and 476 are on diversion due to the accident.
