AN elderly man living in sheltered accommodation was rescued from a flat fire by one of his neighbours on Saturday.
The man, who is in his 80s, was carried from his second-floor flat in Brightwell Court, Mackenzie Road, Holloway, before firefighters reached the scene, after the blaze started at around 6.30pm.
He was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital, where he is still recovering. His flat is heavily smoke damaged but the fire did not spread. About 30 other residents were evacuated from the four-storey sheltered housing block.
Four fire engines and around 20 firefighters tackled the blaze, and had it under control just after 7.30pm. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is thought to have been a cigarette.
