PARENTS and children are invited to have their say on the future of London’s heart hospitals at an event in Islington tomorrow.

The function takes place at the Emirates stadium at 2pm when a proposal by the NHS safe and sustainable team to reduce the number of specialist children’s heart surgery centres in the capital from three to two will be discussed.

A consultation has been launched to debate the change, but only 235 people have responded so far in London.

Leslie Hamilton, Immediate Past President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, said:

“I would like more young people with congenital heart disease and their families respond to the consultation. Making sure children get the very best care possible has been the driving force behind this review since the start and colleagues in the field have long recognised that change is needed if we are going to achieve this.

“No decisions have been made yet and we want your views on how many centres should continue to provide surgical services in London and which centres they should be. I urge you to make sure you have your say.”
