The family of a pregnant woman brutally stabbed to death by her illegal immigrant boyfriend are devastated he is to be released again just five years after the horrific slaying.
Abiodun Ilumoka was beaten and fatally knifed by her partner at their home in Essex Road, Islington, in 2008.
Her killer, Ben Anabah, was detained indefinitely and sentenced to deportation after pleading guilty to manslaughter, but was released from the secure mental institution without the family’s knowledge a number of time last year.
The grieving relatives launched a campaign for a change in the law – with the help of the Gazette and Islington South and Finsbury MP Emily Thornberry.
The matter was debated in the House of Commons and the family were celebrating victory after justice minister Jeremy Wright pledged to look at guidance given to judges as well as deporting Anabah when he is released from hospital.
But yesterday afternoon they received the shocking news the killer was to be released once more.
Yemi Ilumoka, Abiodun’s sister, said: “We have been told his release is imminent – that could be today.
“We are furious and devastated. What purpose does this serve, either to the public or our family?
“Don’t forget this man is an illegal immigrant at high risk of absconding. Now he will be walking free, and we have been told he won’t be tagged, escorted by police or in handcuffs.
“We feel utterly let down by the minister. Just one word from him could stop this.”
Ms Thornberry said: “This man is to be deported when he is judged well again, so what need is there for him to be rehabilitated into using a shopping centre or whatever it is?
“He won’t be within 500 miles of a London shopping centre.
“If the minister was to take a stand and stop this, it might be that it ends up being judicially reviewed. That’s fine, let him fight it out in court.
“It is desperately unfair on the family and the community this person who killed someone and their unborn just a few years ago is on day release.”
Former Highbury Fields School pupil Abiodun, known as Abi, was just a few months away from becoming a mother when she was killed by her partner in June 2008.
Police rushed to her house and discovered Anabah with blood on his hands and mother-to-be Abi in the kitchen.
She was rushed to hospital but died. Attempts to save her baby, including an emergency caesarean, were also unsuccessful.
