As the capital is finally hit with a well-overdue blast of decent weather, many are succumbing to the vice-like grip of festival fever.

If you’re one of those already itching for some outdoor musical shenanigans, fear not, because one of the highlights of the summer is just around the corner.

The eclectic one-day party that is Field Day returns for its sixth year to Victoria Park next Saturday, June 2 – offering all the festival fun without the camping and unwashed crowds.

It will kick-start a monstrous four-day bank holiday weekend, so it’s more than likely festival-goers will be swept up in a mega-strength Jubilee-powered tidal wave of good vibes.

And the line-up doesn’t look too shabby either, featuring Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand, US post-rockers Tortoise and electro-pop maestros Metronomy to name just a few.

The man behind the festival, Tom Baker, 35, head honcho at promoters Eat Your Own Ears, said: “I’m really excited about the line-up, some of the artists we have been trying to book for many years, like R. Stevie Moore, Liars, Beirut. We ask Franz every year and they’ve never been around.”

He added: “Field Day a place to see your favourite artists and discover new and exciting bands. It’s somewhere for music fans to fun around and see as much great music as they can.”

The festival has grown out of small beginnings, from an event staged in a Shoreditch car park, into a relative monster that accommodates 30,000.

“It started as a free event in the car park of the Griffin pub,” Tom said. “There was a great atmosphere and a real mixture of different artists.

“I thought why don’t we do this on a bigger scale, so we started approaching parks and Victoria Park was available. That’s how it came about, and we grew it from there.

“It’s gone from 5,000 to 30,000 people, but we don’t want to go beyond that. It’s big enough – we just want to make it the best event it can be.”

Other acts gracing the various tents and stages will include Errors, Fennesz, Modeselektor, Afrocubism, Hudson Mohawke and many more. There will also be the return of Field Day’s trademark Village Green, hosting “classic” fete games such as Blindfold Sweetcorn Husking Championship, Scone Throwing, Vegetable Discus and Human Wheelbarrow.
