A “quiet, gentle” grandfather who died in the Finsbury Park terror attack was alive when he was hit by a van, an inquest has heard.

Makram Ali, of Haringey, had left night prayers at the Muslim Welfare House in Seven Sisters Road when the vehicle drove into a crowd of people. The 51-year-old is believed to have suffered a “medical episode” shortly before the attack in the early hours of Monday last week, and fallen to the ground. But a post-mortem found Mr Ali’s death was caused by multiple injuries. Det Insp Edwin Hall told St Pancras Coroner’s Court his death was being treated as a terrorist-related killing.

Mr Ali’s family said: “We wish everyone to know what a loving man he was.”

Nine others were injured in the attack. Darren Osborne, 47, of Cardiff, is charged with murder and attempted murder.

Senior coroner Mary Hassell opened and adjourned the inquest until criminal proceedings have finished.
