Thousands of rush-hour commuters may be enduring soul destroying journeys on a regular basis, but transport bosses insist there’s no problem with Finsbury Park station.

This week people have had to queue for 20 minutes just to get a glimpse of the ticket barriers while others found the station closed completely due to overcrowding, which TfL put down to delays on the Tube.

The commuters, however, believe the closure of the Wells Terrace entrance in July may have something to do with it, because it has left just one entrance open during rush hour – until 2019.

Some said this morning’s chaos was the worst they had ever seen and called on TfL to act on the major safety risk.

Patrick Baker wrote on Twitter: “Yet again wholly inadequate crowd management at #FinsburyPark station with no info provided for 100’s of passengers locked outside.”

James Francis Kenny told TfL: “Whatever you’re doing to manage traffic into Finsbury Park isn’t working.”

Another fed up commuter, Blandine Avot, hit out at the travel costs she was having to pay for such a nightmare journey. She said: “Another day starting with chaos at #FinsburyPark station. Can’t get to work while I spend loads on my monthly ticket. Again. #NotFair.”

Luke Harper added: “1 exit closed till 2019 and 3 out of 4 staircases out of action. Which genius devised this idea at Finsbury Park?”

TfL told the Gazette the problem was not the station only having one entrance, but delays on the Victoria Line which also affected Oxford Circus and Victoria – though most stations were not forced to close.

A spokesman said: “We close the entrances to manage the amount of people on the platform. We do it on a day to day basis and we make sure we’re keeping it as safe as we can.

“The station staff are experienced and they know how many people can be on the platform. With the station entrance opening in 2019 there will be more space. The Victoria Line is very overcrowded. It is nothing to do with the station entrances, it is to do with the Victoria Line.”
