THE FIRST new council homes to be built in Islington in 25 years have been given the green light.
Islington Council will become one of the first local authorities in London to start building council housing again after construction was approved at the east area planning committee.
Ten new low rise family-sized homes will be built on the site of the old Boleyn Road Area Housing Office in Newington Green, which is now being demolished.
In recent years most affordable housing has been built by housing associations and through financial contributions negotiated as part of planning permissions.
Councillor Terry Stacy, executive member for housing and communities, said: "We want residents to have somewhere decent to live which is why we are spending millions.
