Twenty-one firefighters tackled a flat blaze yesterday.

Four fire crews were called to the ground floor flat on Tufnell Park Road, Upper Holloway, just after 9am.

Part of the flat was damaged, though no one was present. The fire was under control just before 10am.

Winston Douglas, manager at Islington Fire Station, said: “Thankfully no one was in at the time but there was a smoke alarm that sounded and alerted the neighbours.

“Everyone should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and the safest option is have those linked together. This will give the earliest warning if there is a fire in your home.”

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown.
