Around 100 pensioners attended a free Christmas lunch last Wednesday in celebration of the contribution older citizens make to Islington.
Hosted by the Council, the annual festive feast at Islington Assembly Hall in Upper Street was open to residents aged 70 and over.
Council Leader Richard Watts, who also attended, said: “It’s a fantastic event for the borough’s senior citizens, and an opportunity for the borough to offer them something back for all they have contributed to our communities. I want to say a massive thank you to all councillors, officers, companies and charities who have helped us put this event on. I’m delighted that not only have we been able to run the event, but we’ve done it at no cost to the taxpayer.”
Maureen, from Finsbury, said: “The children’s singing was marvellous: it’s been a lovely get together.”
All costs were covered by sponsors, including Arsenal in the Community, Morris Charitable Trust, Clerkenwell Charities, Islington United Charities, and Mulalley and co. Ltd. The lunch and dessert were prepared by Hillside Clubhouse and music was provided by Highbury Fields School Band and Choir.
