Girl, 7, who died in Finsbury balcony fall is named

Seven-year-old Nawaal Sayid, fell from her home in Emberton Court, in Tompion Street, Finsbury at around 6.45pm on June 25.

The child, who suffered from learning difficulties, was still alive when ambulance crews arrived, but was in cardiac arrest and died later in the Royal London Hospital.

Dr Penny Barratt, headteacher of the Bridge School in Hungerford Road, Holloway, where Nawaal was a pupil, wrote to other parents paying tribute to the young Somalian girl.

She said: “Nawaal was an extremely happy, bubbly, fun loving girl who really enjoyed all the activities she got involved in at school. She brought a smile to the faces of all who came into contact with her. We will really miss her. “

Nawaal was thought to be one of three children in a family that had lived in the flat for three years.

Bouquets of flowers have been placed at the foot of the block where she fell.

One, written in a child’s handwriting, said: “RIP little angel, always in our thoughts. Lots of love.”

Another read: “Gone to soon. RIP angel.”

One neighbour said: “They’d lived here about three years, I knew them to say hello to. I didn’t hear anything last night, I was watching TV. The first I heard was all the sirens, then there were lots of people about outside. It’s shocking.”

Islington Council’s executive member for children and families, Cllr Joe Caluori said: “I was extremely sad to hear of this tragic news. I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to Nawaal’s family at this distressing time.”

The girl’s death is being treated as unexplained and detectives from Islington are investigating.

A post mortem has been scheduled for later this week.
