Google is to create a slice of geek heaven in Islington by opening a new multi-storey ‘Tech-City.’

A seven-floor building in Bonhill Street, Finsbury, will house an array of high-technology businesses, the web search giant has announced.

New firms, known as start-ups, are to comprise a significant portion of the new occupancy.

Turning east London into a high-tech hub meant Britain was “open for business,” insisted Chancellor George Osborne.

“It shows that we can create the right environment to attract start-ups and established high-technology businesses.”

Explaining the decision to move in, Google’s engineering director David Singleton, identified the area as fertile ground for the company.

“It has huge potential for economic growth and new jobs over the coming years,” he said.

New jobs coming into the area was a welcome boost for the economy, said Islington Council.

“We want to make sure there are decent local jobs, so I’m pleased to welcome Google to Islington,” said cllr Paul Convery, member for planning.

“I look forward to their arrival and hope they will join us in our mission to make sure Islington residents are able to access new work opportunities and jobs in the borough.”
