A hundred neighbours were rushed from their beds on Saturday evening as a major gas leak saw Green Lanes locked down.

Gas company Cadent is overseeing the repair work, and paid for displaced households to stay in hotels on Saturday and Sunday evening.

Green Lanes was this morning still shut between Endymion Road and Seven Sisters Road while the leak was being fixed – but it has since reopened under temporary traffic lights,

Cadent says neighbours can now go home, as its engineers have “completed a temporary repair” to a pipe, which is under the road.

A spokesperson for the gas firm said: “Residents, who were evacuated on Saturday night, can now return home.

“However, they are asked to make themselves known to the team on site before returning home so that an engineer can switch their gas back on and carry out essential safety checks on their gas supply.”

It says a permanent repair will be carried out later this week,

A London Fire Brigade (LFB) spokesperson said: “We were called at 6.35 on Saturday, to reports of a smell of gas.

“A safety cordon was in place and approximately 100 people were evacuated from nearby properties as a precaution.”

Two fire engines attended the scene but the LFB’s involvement ended on Sunday morning.
