A woman who had to dodge Second World War bombs falling on the West End in order to buy her wedding dress celebrated her 100th birthday this month.
Emily Crotty, who used to work at the Gordons gin distillery in Clerkenwell, enjoyed a big party at the Cheverton Lodge Care Home, Cheverton Road, Archway, on August 13.
She was joined by her three sisters, all of whom grew up on the Cally, Peggy 87, Doris, 90 and Edith, 102, along with Cllr Catherine West, leader of Islington Council, who delivered a telegram, from the Queen.
He daughter Val Domleo said: “It was a fabulous day and she had a great time. She was treated like a film star all day and I think she was very proud and a bit overwhelmed to get the telegram. Apart from a short stay in Essex she has always lived in Islington. She met her husband at Gordons, and she told me when she was trying to buy her wedding dress on Oxford Street she had to run form shop to shop because of the bombs being dropped.”
