Tuberculosis team at the Whittington hospital open for a year

The tuberculosis team at the Whittington Hospital celebrated its first birthday this month.

Despite being officially opened by award-winning actress Emma Thompson in October, the centre had been up and running for 12 months on May 14.

During that time, staff have diagnosed 165 cases of TB in more than 6500 appointments - 400 of which were children aged 16 or under.

Chris Pearson, a patient who has used the centre, said: “Like most people my age I thought TB was a disease from the 19th century. He added: “The new centre at The Whittington hospital offers expert medical support and care for anyone with TB, in a new and welcoming environment.”
