ONE of Islington’s wisest residents reached the grand old age of 103 on Monday - and celebrated in style.

Ethel Branton spent the day surrounded by friends and neighbours from the Bridgeside Lodge Care Centre, in Wharf Road, Islington.

Her sprightly 80-year-old son, Bob Branton, said: “It went well and mum enjoyed the day.”

Ethel is a retired cleaner, laundry and domestic service worker who lived through both World Wars.

And the secret to a long life? “Hard work,” says Bob. “She entered service at 13 years old and at one point had three cleaning jobs to look after the family. She’s being looked after very well herself now.”
