Islington has topped the Good Food For London league table for the fourth year in a row, leading the way in eight of the nine criteria.

The borough tops the list in a report compiled by London Food Link, excelling in areas such as food growing, living wage and food for life in schools.

However, Islington was said to be lagging behind many other parts of the capital – including Tower Hamlets and Westminster – in terms of being baby friendly, which is largely focussed around a UNICEF-led breast-feeding initiative.

The report said the borough demonstrated “strong leadership to improve food in the borough, including this year achieving the Gold Food for Life Catering Mark standard for school meals”.

Camden came fifth of all London boroughs while Hackney was down in 19th place.

Cllr Janet Burgess, executive member for health and wellbeing, said: “We’re really pleased to be top of the league table again, particularly in terms of healthy food as it’s something we’ve worked really hard on.

“We’ve been working in conjunction with the BHF and we’ve got 109 businesses signed up and committed to health food.”

Cllr Burgess said she expects cafes and restaurants to promote breast feeding.
