A cat fanatic who kept more than 30 animals in her flat could face eviction after making her neighbour’s life a misery with the “revolting” stench.

The Rosario family, who live in Madras Place, Holloway, claim they have spent two years suffering the awful smell and constant cat hair since the woman moved in – and they say the stink is so bad they are embarrassed to have guests round.

The RSCPA say the woman has been attracting cats into her garden, and removed 28 cats after visiting in March. Dead cats were also reportedly found in the garden. A number of cats were left in the property.

In January a judge ordered the woman to get rid of all but two neutered cats and clean the flat, but it is understood that she has not done either and now the family upstairs are at the end of their tether.

Maria Rosario, 43, said: “The stink, the cat hairs, the flies everywhere – it’s revolting. The whole place smells of wee and poo. When the RSPCA visited they found dead kittens. It’s terrible, awful.

“My relationship with my husband has suffered and my daughter can’t have friends round because we are embarrassed about the stench. It’s frustrating and very sad for us.”

As part of the injunction, the court said the flat must be cleaned at the expense of her landlord, Partners for Improvement in Islington (PFI), as she is a council tenant.

But PFI say they can’t clean until the cats are gone – and the organisation says the tenant is refusing the comply with the judge’s instruction.

A spokesman said: “Partners does not tolerate anti-social behaviour and we tackle ASB robustly using all legal powers available. We obtained an injunction from the court and have supported the RSPCA in their repeated visits to the property.

“Only a court order can end a secure tenancy. We sympathise with her neighbours and have offered them our continual support as we go through the legal process.”

The RSPCA said they were working with PFI, but following the animal charity’s intervention it said it had no welfare concerns about any animals at the property.

The spokesman said that it was not clear who was caring for the cats which were said to have been found dead in the garden.

She added: “We believe a resident of Madras Road has been attracting cats by leaving food out in their garden and if anybody has lost a cat in that area we would ask them to contact us on 0300 123 8018.”

“As this work is ongoing we cannot say much more at this stage.
