Islington Council is supporting terminally ill workers – promising they won’t be dismissed as a result of their condition.
The council has signed up to the TUC voluntary charter, which is part of its “Dying to Work” campaign.
The scheme was launched in response to the case of Jacci Woodcook, a 58-year-old sales manager from Derbyshire, who was forced out her job following a breast cancer diagnosis.
Cllr Andy Hull said: “It’s only right we do our best to support and protect terminally ill colleagues, striving to add to their peace of mind and not to their stress and trouble.
“We’re committed to making Islington a fairer place. Agreeing to and abiding by these principles will make the council a better place to work.”
Megan Dobney, TUC regional secretary for London, welcomed the move, saying: “Workers with a terminal diagnosis should not worry about whether their job will be taken away from them. Their employer and workmates should be a source of strength in a time of need.”
