Around 120 administrative staff are set to lose their jobs or have their roles changed at Whittington Hospital.

The hospital, which has 4,500 staff, has hired consultant firm Unipart to redesign administrative practices including processes like appointment booking, in a bid to “improve” patient experience.

Maria da Silva, chief operational officer, said patient feedback indicated patients were not currently receiving the best service when it came to arranging appointments for scans or meeting with consultants.

She said: “There are a lot of complaints about administration. A lot is not because staff don’t want to do their jobs. It’s a problem with administrative processes.

‘‘So we decided we need help to take out inefficiencies.”

Senior executives are also running the programme because of the hospital’s low results in the National Outpatients Survey run by the Care Quality Commission.

It is unclear how many people are at risk of losing their jobs. Ms da Silva said: “I don’t know any actual figures at the moment.

‘‘However, redundancies cost us money so we want to minimise this and get people working more efficiently.”
