This week 30 years ago: Bomb scare outside Jeremy Corbyn’s office

A suitcase, believed to be carrying a bomb, was dumped outside Islington Labour headquarters – where Jeremy Corbyn had an office.
Anti-terrorist police rushed to Islington Labour Centre and Socialist Club in Seven Sisters Road to explode the suitcase. But it was found to contain only rubbish.
Andover Estate caretaker Derek Spall alerted police after seeing a man dump the case at the club’s fire escape and driving off in a car.
Six letter bombs had been sent in London that Easter. And the suitcase was left at a time – Friday night – when Mr Corbyn held weekly surgeries.
But he was away on this occasion. He said: “It’s very reassuring that it was dealt with so quickly. I’m pleased local people are so vigilant.”
