A 70-year-old widow was raped in her Holloway flat.

The woman, of Anson Road, awoke to find a man ransacking her bedroom.

He then raped her – before removing her £1,000 diamond ring and running off.

She was so shocked that she could not provide a description of her attacker.

In other news, actresses Jacqui Redden and Linda Bellingham gave a £1,000 boost to the Whittington Hospital special baby unit.

Jacqui, presenter of the children’s show Tickle on the Tum, and Linda, best known as star of the Oxo adverts, handed over the cheque raised by parents in the unit’s support group.

Meanwhile, Islington Council discussed installing condom machines in its children’s homes.

The move was being considered as part of the Labour-controlled town hall’s initiative against AIDS. But opposition Social Democrat Cllr Gerry Southgate warned: “This needs to be considered very, very carefully. It could have the effect of encouraging youngsters to be sexually active.”
