TRANSPORT for London has given the go-ahead to plans to transform two traffic trouble spots.

The transport body has set aside 2million for a revamp of the busy roundabout at Highbury Corner, which will see the gyratory system removed.

The tree-filled traffic island in the middle could become an accessible green area, with part of the square pedestrianised to allow access. Consultation on the plans is now underway, with work scheduled for 2012.

TfL has also pledged to remodel the nearby junction between Madras Place, Fieldway Crescent and Holloway Road. The junction has a reputation as an accident blackspot, and was the site of a fatal bicycle accident that killed Lisa Pontecorvo in 2008.
