A conman from Highbury has been jailed for his part in tricking elderly and vulnerable people into withdrawing money.
Dujuane Mezu, 20, of Grosvenor Avenue, was locked up for a year for conspiracy to commit fraud on Monday. He also received an extra five months for beaching a suspended sentence for a previous offence.
He was arrested in October after posing as a courier to collect money from a victim in Kent. The woman in her 80s was called by someone claiming to be a New Scotland Yard officer, who said there was an issue with her bank. Believing it was a scam she went to Sittingbourne police station and officers arrested Mezu when he arrived at her home.
Mezu and Hamza Ali, of Dollis Hill, were sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday. Det Insp Annie Clayton said: “These men preyed on elderly people for their own financial gain. They showed no remorse for their involvement.”
