Forty new homes will be built on Highbury’s Park View Estate – 22 of which will be for social rent.
The town hall planning committee last week signed off its own project, which will see six new blocks built without any existing homes being flattened.
Designed by architects Burrell Foley Fischer, the homes will be built on green spaces and disused land within the estate, with car parks turned into new green spaces in return.
Islington’s housing chief Cllr Diarmaid Ward said: “There is a desperate shortage of affordable homes in the borough, so providing high quality, affordable properties for our residents is one of our priorities.
“The new housing at the Park View Estate is an excellent example of how it is possible to create new homes on under-developed and under-used unattractive spaces, and improve the existing estate environment at the same time.”
A community centre will be built at the bottom of one of the blocks, and the estate will also get a new recycling area, a bike lock-up and landscaping.
