Three off-licences have been stripped of their right to sell alcohol by the council’s licensing team.

Saigon Eagle Off Licence, in Hornsey Road, Holloway, Your Local Supermarket in Highbury New Park, Highbury and the Mediterranean Food Centre in the Marquess Estate, off St Paul’s Road, Holloway, all lost their licences earlier this month over alleged indiscretions.

After a sting operation in November, Trading Standards said alcopops were sold to a 14-year-old girl at the Saigon Eagle Off Licence and to a 14-year-old girl accompanied by a 17-year-old at Your Local Supermarket.

At the Mediterranean Food Centre, more than 100 bottles of wine were found which were thought to be smuggled, along with 35 packs of Marlboro cigarettes and three packs of Golden Virginia tobacco which had foreign language warnings.

The businesses now have 21 days in which to appeal the decision.

Cllr Barbara Sidnell, executive member for community safety, Islington Council said: “We insist the law is observed – without exception. Our guidance protects businesses and customers – but these premises have chosen to ignore it at great cost.

“We do not like seeing people’s livelihoods endangered, but we cannot allow businesses to supply customers with illicit alcohol that may be unsafe to consume. In addition, it is utterly indefensible to supply children with alcohol.”

At the same meeting, the panel refused a licence application for the Blue Nile Wine Bar, in Seven Sisters Road, Holloway.

The bar had asked to sell booze until 5am at the weekends, but many residents, along with the Mayor of Islington, Cllr Phil Kelly and Jeremy Corbyn, MP for Islington North, had objected.

Meanwhile the EDA Food Centre, in Hornsey Road, Hornsey Rise, who lost the right to sell alcohol in August last year after illicit alcohol was found at the premises, was granted permission to sell alcohol from 8am to midnight, Monday to Sunday.
