Morrisons in the Holloway Road has turfed out a group of people accused of taking drugs and causing trouble in the stairs to the supermarket.

Customers complained people were congregating in the two stairwells adjacent to the emergency exit leading to the car park, as reported by the Gazette in September.

At the time, shoppers reported stepping over discarded syringes and seeing “human faeces on the walls and floors”.

But now the supermarket giant, which previously conceded this branch had anti-social problems, has kicked the group out.

When approached in September, a Morrisons spokesperson said: “We have a zero tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour in and around our stores and are continuing to work with the local police to find solutions to the problems.” The Gazette has approached it for an updated comment.

Finsbury Park police have also worked with Islington Council and the Nag’s Head Town Centre Management Group to produce an “environmental visual audit” (EVA) of the area.

EVAs are detailed plans that identify what anti-social behaviour problems there are in a particular place before suggesting actions to tackle them.

Finsbury Park police tweeted: “Morrisons have recently taken action by closing the stairwells in the car park, which was a hotspot for drug use.

“My team patrol the car park and surrounding streets daily when on duty. We have recently had several arrests from the car park for drug offences.”

In response to comments about open drug dealing in the surrounding area, the @MPSFinsburyPark account added: “I appreciate your frustrations and recognise there are problems in the area.

“I have managed to secure additional resources – we now have six dedicated constables to the ward and are supported by officers from [Islington Police].”

Cllr Gary Heather (Lab, Finsbury Park) said this was part of a wider crackdown on anti-social behaviour in and around Finsbury Park.

He said: “They’ve done a crime audit and gone into specifics which is good because it means they’re mapping out where the problems are.

“I know the police are targeting the Finsbury Park area as a whole because the crime level has gone up substantially – every day there is something going on.”
